This is an amazing story! I just sat here mesmerized by your writing and recollection of it all. I'm so sorry you had such a terrible experience that day - what a jerk that guy was! Thanks for sharing :]

Wow what a complete jack@$$! I remember we were working in the hospital in St. Louis (I was in a research lab). EVERYONE was huddled around talking about what was happening and crying.
Miss Scarlett, Yes, it's amazing how shallow (and most likely insecure!) some people are. I've since done google searches on the guy, and he is just a mean person. He seems to get off on putting people down. Anyway, I'm fairly certain the other guy didn't rat me out. The "barron" was just a big enough control freak that he was watching all the IM traffic.

And, yes, my step-brother (who I didn't know all that well at the time, but was worried for my step-father's sake) was ok. I believe he was stuck in Canada that day.

I can't believe that!
What horrifically narrow people.

Everyone single person I knew or ran into or met at stores, gas stations etc It was all we spoke of. All we were thinking of.
Everything else just went into a holding pattern that day for sure.

I worked at a daycare and we kept our computer on cnn all day (it wasn't in the same room as the children!) so that we knew what was happening (with the time difference all the major events had occurred before we openend -- west coast)

I am totally shocked that there wasn't open defiance at an order to return to work! This guy must have been some kind of boss. Most offices I heard of sent everyone home for the day or gave them the choice.

I think it was a good thing you didn't stay there -- those people sound like heartless automatons!
(hey did he just have a viewing program or did the other guy rat you out?) {clearly you are talking to a non-computer tech type}

Ho-Ly. Crap.

Sadly, yours is the story closest to mine, but thankfully mine wasn't anything like that.

To make a long story short, my coders kept trying to have serious meetings with me about the project, like anyone was doing any sort of work. Apparently they were.

One guy was watching the TV someone had pulled into the cube farm and was making really bizarre comments, like it was all a movie or a game. I remember him just sort of chuckling as he mentally added up what he thought the whole thing would cost, adding of the price of planes and buildings and saying his forecasts out loud. It was the most surreal day.

I just worked, even though I wasn't sure where my family was.

Jeannette - wow, what a memory. I hope 10 years later that man is ashamed of himself. **hugs** It is sad to think that some people completely lack compassion.
